U.S.-Canada mayors call for safer rail oil shipping

Mayors of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River cities are calling for improved safety of oil transportation across through the region.

The mayors of both Canadian and U.S. cities say the reaction of federal governments and energy and transportation companies to accidents such as Lac-Megantic has been slow and insufficient.

The devastating derailment and explosion in Lac-Megantic last year resulted in 47 deaths and the destruction of half the downtown area of the Quebec community.

They say the recent increase in rail transportation of oil, and the string of accidents, is a major concern.
