NY Assembly passes birth control insurance bill

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A bill that would prevent employers from discriminating against workers for reproductive health decisions has passed the Democratic-led Assembly.

The "Boss bill," passed 80-22 on Wednesday, seeks to close a loophole in New York's anti-discrimination laws.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule soon in case brought by the store Hobby Lobby, which is seeking to remove certain emergency contraception coverage from the mandated health insurance services required under the Affordable Care Act. It claims the services violate the company's religious beliefs.

If the Supreme Court rules in favor of Hobby Lobby, the Boss bill would protect New York employees from retaliation or harassment based on their reproductive health care.

The bill has been sent to the Republican-led Senate.
