Burlington pays off debt on McNeil power station

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) The city of Burlington has paid off its debt on the 30-year-old McNeil power station.

On Monday, Mayor Miro Weinberger tossed a copy of the bond into the station's wood-burning furnace as the city marked the full repayment of its debt.

Weinberger says the McNeil power station has had a long and impressive history.

General Manager Barbara Grimes said during her last day on the job Monday that the plant encourages the use of sustainably harvested wood and accepts waste wood and employs foresters.

The Burlington Free Press reports the city will use some of the $8 million it paid each year on the plant's debt to go toward the purchase of the Winooski One hydroelectric plant, which was approved by voters on Town Meeting Day.
