Mar 10, 2004 — A 63-year-old woman known as the ``Deer Lady'' is on trial for violating the state's ban on feeding wild deer. Anita Depczynski is on trial after being ticketed repeatedly by conservation officers in a suburban park outside Buffalo. New York is among many states that have made feeding deer illegal in hopes of stopping the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease. The fatal brain disease has been found in deer and elk as far east as Wisconsin. Biologists say it's passed from animal to animal when deer congregate. Depczynski has rejected all talk of settling the case, hoping to bring attention to the plight of the deer in the town's shrinking green space. The Great Lakes Radio Consortium's Joyce Kryszak found Depczynski outdoors in the park recently, still feeding the deer.
