Fiery Crash at Northway Checkpoint Leaves 4 Dead

Listen to this story
At least four people are dead after a fiery crash Sunday afternoon at a controversial immigration checkpoint on the Northway. Officials say at least six accidents have occurred at the traffic stop this year. Brian Mann has details.

Two Canadians were also killed last week in an accident at a border checkpoint near Buffalo. Fritz Lippold, age 75, was driving toward the Peace Bridge when he struck a tractor trailer idling near an on-ramp. State police believe Lippold didn't realize traffic was stopped and never hit his brakes before slamming into the truck at high speed. Lippold, a resident of Port Colborne, Ontario, died Friday morning at a Buffalo hospital. His wife, Doreen, was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers say signs along the highway warn motorists to be alert for traffic backups near the bridge.
