Nov 02, 2004 — For more than 20 years, Jane Beck has traveled the back roads of Vermont to record oral interviews of everyday Vermonters. As founding director of the Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury, she has been instrumental in keeping Vermont's folk art, crafts and family stories alive. Governor James Douglas and The Vermont Arts Council presented the 2004 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts to Jane Beck, founder of the Vermont Folklife Center at a ceremony in Middlebury last Friday. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Vermont Folklife Center. Todd Moe talks with Beck about her work with the Folklife Center. She's the first person to receive this award who is not a full-time practicing artist.
