Rising Oil Prices Mean High Heating Costs

With energy costs rising substantially for a second year, and oil prices hitting new record highs, home heating bills are expected to soar. Heating oil prices in the North Country are already up 6% this month, to $2.34 a gallon. That's 80 cents higher than last September. Propane and natural gas prices are also skyrocketing.

The price of heating oil is of particular concern in the region, since the North Country uses a disproportionate share statewide of heating oil. In rural districts, far from gas pipelines, some families will bear the winter in old housing stock. At these prices, that spells trouble.
