After GOP Rift, Essex DA Race Turns Ugly

Listen to this story
The Essex County district attorney race has been ugly and controversial. Independent and Conservative candidate Debra Whitson from Willsboro lost the Republican primary but decided to stay in the race. She has since accused her Republican rival of once living with a drug dealer. The GOP's candidate, Julie Garcia from Schroon Lake, says the claim is false and has announced plans to sue Whitson for defamation of character. The race was first thrown into turmoil last spring when Republicans declined to endorse veteran DA Ron Briggs. Ed Forbes is editor of the Lake Placid News. The weekly paper's latest issue has an in depth report on the Essex County race. He tells Brian Mann that the divisive campaign reflects deep divisions within the GOP.
