GOP's North Country Stronghold Now In Play
Nov 18, 2005 — The North Country has long been seen a stronghold for New York's Republican Party. Deep support in this region helped elect Governor George Pataki. In some towns, voter registration still runs 3-to-1 in favor of the GOP. But for the first time in decades, the North Country has a Democratic assemblyman, Darryl Aubertine, who won re-election in 2004 by a 2-to-1 margin. In last week's election, Democrat LeRoy Akins edged incumbent Republican Harold Taylor and will take over as mayor of Glens Falls. Plattsburgh assemblyman Chris Ortloff, a Republican, represents the 114th District. Ortloff says his party can't take this region's support for granted, especially in 2006.
