PFLAG Chapter Begins in Jefferson County
Mar 21, 2006 — A Watertown woman says a change in community attitudes towards gays and lesbians in Jefferson county has long been needed. Bobbi Petranchuk, the mother of a gay teenager is starting a Jefferson county chapter of PFLAG - Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. PFLAG has more than 500 chapters nationwide. The first meeting is tonight (7 pm) at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Watertown. Petranchuk says Indian River Central School will be the focus of the chapters educational mission. She wants to introduce PFLAG's safety and educational program, called "From Our House to the Schoolhouse", a partnership of families and educators. She told Todd Moe that her gay son, Charlie, was repeatedly harassed by other students until he dropped out in ninth grade.
