May 17, 2006 — The vast majority of school budgets passed in the North Country yesterday. Budgets were defeated in Gouverneur, Indian Lake, Fort Edward, and Hadley-Luzerne Central School. Most spending propositions passed too. But voters in Massena said no to a $30 million dollar capital project to improve playing fields and add space to the school buildings. In Glens Falls a 2.5 million dollar proposal to install synthetic turf at the high school football field was narrowly defeated. It was a clean sweep for school budgets in Clinton, Essex, Jefferson, Lewis and Franklin counties. But in Saranac Lake, voters rejected several controversial spending proposals, including a plan that would have meant the closure of an elementary school in Lake Clear. Chris Knight has more.
