Nov 03, 2006 — Love 'em or hate 'em -- when you're in a conversation about "Wal-Mart" or the "big box economy", you're usually talking about retail. Either how the shopping is good, or the impact on downtown is bad. Or vice versa. But a new book is encouraging small business people and local economic developers - even consumers -- to look beyond retail. Economist Michael Shuman has already written a book called Going Local. Now he's gone deeper into the relationship between the big box, and the small business. His latest book is called The Small-Mart Revolution: how local businesses are beating the global competition. Martha Foley sat down with him, and Karen St. Hilaire of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce during a return visit to the North Country.
