The View From Aspen: To Save "Local" Resort Towns Must Plan

This week, a local government leader from Aspen Colorado spoke at an affordable housing conference in Saranac Lake, sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Tourism. Mick Ireland has been a commissioner in Pitkin County for ten years. Ireland spoke with Brian Mann. He says Aspen is fighting to retain its local character.  Go to full article

Aspen Expert Says Adirondacks Faces Resort Housing Crisis

At an affordable housing conference Wednesday in Saranac Lake, regional leaders heard a presentation from Mick Ireland. Ireland is a local government leader in Aspen, Colorado. Ft. Drum Growth Stresses Housing Market

The area around Fort Drum, Watertown, and beyond is on the brink of a building boom. But some say it might be more of a housing crisis. 4,200 soldiers and their families are moving to the region as the army base adds a new 3rd Brigade. The army is also beginning a $315 million renovation of its existing housing on base. That's good news for builders, realtors, and economic growth. Mobile Home Replacement Program

For many, owning a home on a plot of land is the Great American Dream. And the quickest route to realizing that dream is often the most affordable option: the mobile home, or trailer. But a cheap price tag can also mean shoddy construction. Some mobile homes quickly become leaky and expensive to heat in winter, and can become fire hazards for their occupants. A successful Jefferson County program has helped families replace their old trailers with more permanent homes. And now the program is targeting substandard trailers in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties as well. But the quality and consistency of mobile homes has changed over the years, and dealers think the program gives mobile homes a bad rap. David Sommerstein has the story.

The North Country Affordable Housing Program is currently taking applications for mobile residents in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. They can be reached at (315)785-8684 or, toll free, (866)653-8724.  Go to full article
