Bill Would Open Liquor Stores on Sundays

There's a bill in the state legislature to repeal New York's blue laws and open the states liquor stores on Sundays. Supporters say it's one way of gaining more revenue for a cash-strapped state budget. Karen Dewitt reports.  Go to full article

Communities That Care Idea Spreads to St. Lawrence County

A youth survey in 2001 showed high rates of alcohol use among students in 16 districts throughout St. Lawrence County. The survey was given to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The results confirmed what local health officials basically knew already, that alcohol use and abuse is a continuing problem in the county. To address the risks of alcohol, drug and other teen problem behaviors, local representatives from human service agencies, law enforcement and education began training in the Communities That Care initiative. Curbing Alcohol Abuse on College Campuses

Alcohol consumption and alcohol related problems are a significant concern on our nations college campuses. Studies over the last ten years show the highest proportion of heavy drinkers tend to be within the age range encompassing most college students.

Dr. Jason Kilmer, is a research scientist for the Addictive Behaviors Research Center at the University of Washington and an addictive behaviors specialist at Evergreen State College. Dr. Kilmer visited St. Lawrence University Monday in an effort to help college faculty, staff and students curb high risk drinking on campus.
