Fisherman reels in record drum on Lake Ontario

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A fisherman from western New York has been credited with catching a record-breaking freshwater drum in Lake Ontario.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says James VanArsdall of West Henrietta caught the fish in Irondequoit Bay in Monroe County on June 14. The fish measured 33.5 inches and weighed 26 pounds 9 ounces.  Go to full article

Air defense drill for 4 Northeastern states

ROME, N.Y. (AP) The New York state Division of Military and Naval Affairs says a two fighter jets from a Massachusetts Air National Guard unit will be conducting an air defense exercise over parts of four Northeastern states.

Officials say the exercise will be conducted from 10 a.m. until noon Tuesday over northeast New York, southern Vermont, western Connecticut and Massachusetts. The exercise is being run by the Eastern Air Defense Sector based in Rome, near Utica.  Go to full article

Opponents petition regulators against pipeline

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) About 40 protesters have converged on the building that houses the Vermont Public Service Board to demand a halt to the natural gas pipeline expansion underway in western Vermont.

Anti-pipeline activists staged a "fish-in"--complete with poles, a canoe and a petition with 500 signatures on Tuesday afternoon to protest what they're calling a bait and switch by project developer Vermont Gas.  Go to full article

NY adding cameras for drivers running red lights

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed bills to expand the use of traffic cameras at intersections to catch drivers running red lights.

Bills recently approved by the Legislature will continue programs in New York City, as well Suffolk and Nassau counties and Rochester through 2019.  Go to full article

Albany airport to get nearly $4 million upgrade

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Albany International Airport is getting nearly $4 million in federal money for runway repaving and other upgrades.

The Department of Transportation award was announced Tuesday by U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Paul Tonko.  Go to full article

NY agencies collecting more gender data

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) State agencies have begun adding gender identity to their data collection, part of an effort Gov. Andrew Cuomo says will help the state better meet the needs of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender New Yorkers.

A new report Wednesday identifies eight agencies, including the Department of Health, collecting or updating their data systems to gather those demographics.  Go to full article

After 43 years in office, mayor to run again

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) One of the longest-serving mayors in New York state's history says he's planning to run for a 12th term in office.

Albany's Pine Bush named national landmark

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) The National Park Service has designated the Albany Pine Bush a national natural landmark as an outstanding example of a globally rare ecosystem.

The sandy region of pitch pines and scrub oaks along the Thruway west of Albany joins 596 other sites across the country recognized as natural landmarks.  Go to full article

Recreational projects funded for Adirondacks

INDIAN LAKE, N.Y. (AP) Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced funding for several projects to expand and improve outdoor recreation in the Adirondacks.

The Town of Indian Lake will receive $750,000 to repair and upgrade the Lake Abanakee Dam on the Indian River to bring the dam into compliance with state dam safety regulations. The upgrade will also allow continued water releases from the dam for rafters who paddle down the Indian River into the Hudson River.  Go to full article
