NY motorists advised to beware of deer

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Motorists who travel the New York State Thruway are being advised to be alert for deer on the highway this spring.

The Thruway Authority and state police Troop T have issued their semi-annual "antler alert" to remind motorists that deer are more active in May and June. Officials say the most deer-vehicle collisions on the Thruway occur during the next two months and October through November.  Go to full article

Essex County OKs earlier bar closing time

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) Lawmakers in the northern New York county that's home to Lake Placid have approved a measure requiring bars to close an hour earlier.

The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh reports that the Essex County Board of Supervisors voted Monday to change the legal closing time from 4 a.m. to 3 a.m. The measure now goes to the State Liquor Authority for final approval.  Go to full article

Schumer wants to block 3D plastic guns

NEW YORK (AP) New York Sen. Charles Schumer says the ability for making an untraceable and undetectable gun with a 3D printer is "stomach-churning."

Report: NY in hunt for big computer plant upstate

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he may soon make a major economic announcement for upstate New York as published reports say a computer plant codenamed "Project Azalea" is in negotiations to create 1,000 jobs.

Cuomo refused to say anything about the project he hinted at during a news conference Wednesday. He called it a potential "big economic development piece" for the long struggling region.  Go to full article

NY state overtime costs up 11 percent

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says state overtime pay rose nearly 11 percent last year to $529 million, continuing a costly trend since workforce cuts beginning in 2009.  Go to full article
