NY Authority OKs water funds for Tappan Zee Bridge

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan to use clean water funds to help pay for the new Tappan Zee Bridge has been approved by a key state board.

The state Thruway Authority board voted Wednesday to accept the $256 million, five-year loan from the state's Environmental Facilities Corp. The Authority plans to request a second $256 million loan, perhaps next year.  Go to full article

No prior defects found in bus that crashed on Northway

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York State Police say they have found no prior mechanical defects that contributed to a Canadian tour bus crash that killed a teenage girl in upstate New York last month.

The crash about 8 a.m. on July 18 on Interstate 87, also known as the Adirondack Northway, left the bus on its side in a grassy median about 90 miles north of Albany.  Go to full article

NY internships available to college students

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Civil Service Commissioner Jerry Boone says the application deadline is approaching for hundreds of internship opportunities available within New York State government.

He's encouraging college students to submit applications for the fall semester as soon as possible. The deadline is Sept. 8.  Go to full article

Syracuse chief: No. 1 party school label not OK

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) The chancellor of Syracuse University says his college's ranking as the nation's top party school is a "wake-up call" for change.

In a message posted on the university's website Tuesday and emailed to students, staff and alumni, Kent Syverud says being designated The Princeton Review's No. 1 party school isn't a good thing for a school to be labeled.  Go to full article

Sen. Sanders: Veterans bill will reduce wait times

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders says a bill passed by Congress to improve health care for veterans is the most significant piece of legislation affecting veterans in many years.

General killed in Afghanistan was 1980 RPI grad

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) The U.S. military has identified the officer killed during an insider attack in Afghanistan as Maj. Gen. Harold Greene, who was born in upstate New York and graduated in 1980 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Greene was the highest-ranking American officer killed in combat since 1970.  Go to full article

New York man charged with threatening President

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) A 30-year-old western New York man is charged with tweeting threats against President Barack Obama and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Brandon Correa of Rochester pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in federal court Tuesday after a federal grand jury indicted him on charges that include threatening the president.  Go to full article

Group adds Plattsburgh's Old Stone Barracks to "save" list

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) Pre-Civil War barracks on the grounds of the Plattsburgh Air Force Base have been added to a preservation organization's list of the most threatened historic resources in New York state.

Congressman Bill Owens joined local officials and leaders of the Preservation League of New York State at Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh for the group's announcement Tuesday regarding the Old Stone Barracks being added to the "Seven to Save" list.  Go to full article

NY troopers targeting speeders, aggressive drivers

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) As NASCAR drivers head to Watkins Glen for the upcoming Sprint Cup Series weekend, New York's state troopers will be conducting a week-long enforcement effort targeting speeders and aggressive drivers across the state.

The state police "Speed Week" campaign runs from Aug. 6 through Aug. 12.  Go to full article

US Geological Survey commissions research vessel

OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) The U.S. Geological Survey is launching the newest addition to its fleet of large research vessels on Lake Ontario.

A traditional commissioning ceremony is being held Wednesday morning at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego. Suzette Kimball, acting director of the U.S. Geological Survey, will christen the vessel.  Go to full article
