NY beefs up post-partum depression screening

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York state is implementing new screening guidelines to help health care professionals recognize post-partum depression.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation intended to help doctors and nurses recognize the signs of depression in new mothers and get patients the care they need. The bill singles out pediatricians as playing a vital role in identifying depression in new mothers.  Go to full article

Cuomo: power subsidies to spur jobs in New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York is offering low-cost electricity to 26 companies that have agreed to create or retain jobs.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the latest round of energy subsidies on Monday. The 26 companies--along with three non-profit organizations--are expected to use the low-cost power to support more than 3,000 jobs.  Go to full article

Schumer calls for federal rules on drone use

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says privately operated drone aircraft are posing a threat to safety and privacy and should be regulated by the federal government.

The Democrat says New York has become "the wild west" for private drones since a court case limited the federal government's ability to regulate the use of the small, remote controlled aircraft.  Go to full article

NY excludes prison time from sex-abuse law

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York has amended its penal law to exclude prison and jail time when calculating the 10-year period that elevates a repeated low-level sex offense into a felony.

The law effective Nov. 1 will exclude time locked up from the calculation whereby two or more misdemeanor offenses rise to "persistent sexual abuse" punishable by up to four years in prison.  Go to full article
