Schumer calls for federal rules on drone use

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says privately operated drone aircraft are posing a threat to safety and privacy and should be regulated by the federal government.

The Democrat says New York has become "the wild west" for private drones since a court case limited the federal government's ability to regulate the use of the small, remote controlled aircraft.  Go to full article

NY excludes prison time from sex-abuse law

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York has amended its penal law to exclude prison and jail time when calculating the 10-year period that elevates a repeated low-level sex offense into a felony.

The law effective Nov. 1 will exclude time locked up from the calculation whereby two or more misdemeanor offenses rise to "persistent sexual abuse" punishable by up to four years in prison.  Go to full article

NY awarding $36M in grants to help crime victims

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York has announced $36 million in grants for 179 community organizations, hospitals, police and agencies statewide for services to crime victims.

The grants administered by the Office of Victim Services are expected to expand the assistance network by funding 22 additional providers.  Go to full article

Cuomo expected to sign tougher drunken driving law

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign an amendment to New York's laws against drunken driving that would turn three DWI-related offenses within 15 years into a felony.

Possible penalties for the felony are up to seven years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.  Go to full article

Canadian border crossings could see busy weekend

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Customs officials are telling travelers to brace for the possibility of busy border crossings into Canada this weekend.

Monday is the civic holiday in Canada often called "Provincial Day." That can mean more Canadian travelers taking advantage of the long weekend by crossing the border at western and northern New York crossings.  Go to full article

NY Antique Boat Museum holds its 50th annual show

CLAYTON, N.Y. (AP) The Antique Boat Museum on the St. Lawrence River is holding its 50th annual show and auction this weekend.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that the museum's first boat show in 1965 featured 18 antique boats and a small exhibition. Up to 125 antique boats are expected to take part in this weekend's festivities at the museum in Clayton, in the Thousand Islands region along the Canadian border.  Go to full article

Trump selected to advance in Bills' sale process

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Donald Trump's attorney has confirmed the real estate mogul has been chosen to advance to the next round of bidding to purchase the Buffalo Bills.

A person close to the process confirmed Buffalo Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula also have been selected by Morgan Stanley, a firm overseeing the sale for late owner Ralph Wilson's estate. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the sale process is supposed to be private.  Go to full article

Burlington health center getting $250K in funding

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) A Vermont organization is getting $250,000 in Affordable Care Act funding to establish or expand behavioral health services for 461 people.
