Vermont evaluating heroin antidote use at 6 months

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Vermont Health Department statistics show that overdose antidote kits for heroin and other opiate drugs distributed to the general public were used 38 times to treat overdoses during the first six months of a pilot program.

Of the total, the antidote was used 34 times to treat heroin overdoses.  Go to full article

$5M state grant for U of Rochester computer center

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) A University of Rochester project on the use of computers for health research has won $5 million in state economic development funds.

The grant was one of 11 state investments totaling $22 million announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday.  Go to full article

Hudson Valley groups ask NY state about oil trains

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (AP) Two environmental groups is asking New York state to reveal details about rail shipments of crude oil through the Hudson Valley.

The Times-Herald Record of Middletown reports that Earthjustice and Hudson Riverkeeper want to know more about the controversial trains. The paper says Earthjustice attorney Chris Amato filed a Freedom of Information Law request last week seeking records CSX Corp. submitted to the state about its crude-oil shipments.  Go to full article

Glens Falls to auction civic center

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (AP) The city-owned Glens Falls Civic Center is going on the auction block.

Mayor Jack Diamond says the arena has been operating at a loss since it was built in 1979. He says there's a projected shortfall of $900,000 this year based on events booked so far.  Go to full article

NY health officials urge mosquito bite precautions

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York state residents are being urged to avoid mosquito bites this summer now that health officials have found the season's first trace of West Nile Virus.

The state's Department of Health says the virus was confirmed in a mosquito sample from Rockland County last week.  Go to full article

Firefighters warn of July 4 fireworks hazards

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) The New York firefighters' association is urging people to leave Fourth of July fireworks to the professionals.

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York says that attending public fireworks displays is the safest way to celebrate the upcoming holiday. The group said fireworks are illegal to own or use by anyone other than licensed professionals in New York.  Go to full article

Leahy to hold hearing in Vermont on net neutrality

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy plans to convene a hearing in Vermont to gather opinions from residents on a proposal by the Federal Communications Commission that could create fast lanes for Internet traffic from websites that can afford to pay more.

Small businesses can seek loans for May flooding

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Eligible Vermont small businesses have until July 21 to file for federal disaster loans for losses from the excessive rain and flooding in May.

The U.S. Small Business Administration says federal economic injury disaster loans are available to businesses and nonprofits in all 14 counties.  Go to full article

NY loans to help homeowners at risk of foreclosure

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New York's attorney general has announced a new small loan program intended to help homeowners at risk of foreclosure.

Eric Schneiderman announced the new program on Thursday. Called the New York State Mortgage Assistance Program, the initiative is starting on Long Island this September before being opened up to the entire state in October.  Go to full article

Lake Placid to host international luge conference

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) The International Luge Federation will host its annual congress in Lake Placid in 2016.

State Olympic Regional Development Authority and USA Luge officials secured the 64th congress during the federation's recent meeting in Innsbruck, Austria.  Go to full article
