Remembering Watertown's "Iron Block"

The main square in downtown Watertown looks very different this week. Workers are demolishing three buildings on Public Square known as the Iron Block. They were built in the 1850s, around the time when many North Country downtowns were filling in. The Iron Block has housed taverns, barber shops, restaurants, a hotel, and a factory. David Sommerstein spoke with Jefferson County historian Ben Cobb. Cobb is 33 years old, so he remembers the more recent tenants.  Go to full article

Malone: Historic Buildings Reclaimed, College Honored

North Country Community College has won an award for the school's work in Malone, to save two historic buildings -- including Ballard Mill, a woolen clothing factory built in the early 1900s. The 4 million dollar project has reshaped the campus on the bank of the Salmon River. As Brian Mann reports, enrollment has doubled over the last two years.  Go to full article
