State Officials Prepare for Next Round of Military Base Closures

A decade ago, a base-closing sweep cost New York ten-thousand jobs at bases in Plattsburgh, Rome and Staten Island. In the last round of base closures, in 1995, Governor Pataki says lobbying efforts allowed the state to avoid cuts of some four-thousand jobs in Rome and Niagara Falls. Fort Drum Soldiers Welcomed Home, Decorated With Ribbons

In early March, soldiers from Fort Drum fought a pitched battle at Shah-I-Khot in Afghanistan. 8 American soldiers died in the fighting. None of those men were based in the North Country. But more than 20 Fort Drum soldiers were injured. Now, the troops who took part in Operation Anaconda are coming home. They're being welcomed by eager families - and recognized for brave service. 10th Mountain Division: The Real Life of Peacekeepers

More than 3000 men and women from the 10th Mountain Division--based at Fort Drum near Watertown--are deployed in the Yugoslavian province of Kosovo. They're enforcing a delicate peace between Kosovar Serbs and Kosovar Albanians. And they're helping to rebuild a region torn apart by war. But for the individual soldier, the daily grind of peacekeeping can sometimes obscure the mission.
