North Country Rivals Face Off in Potsdam

Across North America, it's been a long, quiet winter for National Hockey League fans. But Division I college hockey has kept North Country fans in the action. Last Saturday night was one of the signature events of the season - the twice annual rivalry match between the St. Lawrence University Skating Saints and the Clarkson University Golden Knights. Neither team is having a stellar season. The Saints came into the game with an 11-9 record, but were riding a four-game winning streak. The Knights languished near the bottom of the ECAC at 6-13. But that didn't stop Canton and Potsdam faithful from packing Clarkson's Cheel Arena. David Sommerstein took his seat just as the game was about to start. The Clarkson Knight mascot literally jumped out of the zamboni, the lights dimmed low, and the players burst onto the ice... In the end, SLU clobbered Clarkson, 7-2.  Go to full article

SLU Relay to Benefit the Giving Tree Program

Track and field students at St. Lawrence University will be running a 24-hour relay to benefit the "Giving Tree" program, a charitable organization that serves needy families in the county. Starting at noon today, runners will hit the track in the Newell Field House, where at least one team member will be doing laps throughout the entire 24 hours. Commentary: The Boston Marathon

Last May, commentator Betsy Kepes ran fast enough in the Ottawa Marathon to qualify for the prestigious Boston Marathon. Last Monday, she started running in a small town 26 miles west of Boston and ran east through town after town to the race finish at the Boston Public Library.  Go to full article

Saranac Lake Drops "Racist" Mascot Name: Some Say Vote Heralds Change Across New York State

After fifty years, the Saranac Lake Central School has decided to drop its team mascot name. The District school board voted 6-to-1 last night to retire the name "Redskins," a term which some in the community describe as insensitive or even racist. As Brian Mann reports, many of the school's students and alumni oppose the change. Others say schools across the north country will soon have to follow the district's lead.  Go to full article
