(01/02/06) There's a national debate underway over the best ways to prevent children from riding adult-sized ATVs. All sides agree on one thing. Kids under the age of sixteen should never ride full-powered 4-wheelers. After her son James died in 2004 Carolyn Anderson began working to educate parents about the dangers of the sport. She launched a website and began working with safety advocates around the country. Carolyn's commentary about her family's experience was produced by Brian Mann.

APA Hears Boreal Forest Arguments
(05/25/05) The Adirondack Park Agency held the first of five public meetings in Colton last night. The agency is gathering comments regarding the classification, or reclassification, of 78 parcels of forest land in the Adirondack Park. In St. Lawrence County, the focus is on one of them - a boreal forest that borders Carry Falls reservoir on the Raquette River. Environmentalists want to protect a rare habitat. ATV and snowmobile riders want access. David Sommerstein reports.

Snowmobile hearing in Colton
Snowmobile hearing in Colton
(02/05/04) New York's Conservation department was expected to begin a series of public hearings next week, on a controversial snowmobile plan for the Adirondack Park. But yesterday, top DEC officials traveled from Albany to hold their first hearing in the town Colton, south of Potsdam. The session wasn't on the DEC's official schedule and the agency gave no public notice of the meeting. As Brian Mann reports, last night's hearing was actually hosted by a snowmobile advocacy group. Many of those who attended the three-hour session say snowmobile tourism is being stifled by an outdated network of trails--and by a state bureaucracy that's biased against their sport.

(07/09/03) The popularity of 4-wheeled all-terrain vehicles is booming in New York state. A new study published this week by the Wildlife Conservation Society found that ATV registrations jumped from thirteen thousand to nearly a hundred thousand in the last decade. As Brian Mann reports, thousands of 4-wheelers are being sold here in the North Country, but there are few places where people can ride the machines legally.

(05/19/03) On Wednesday, the Hancock Timber Resource group will open bids on more than a hundred and twenty thousand acres of land in the Adirondacks and Vermont. The land sale worries sportsmen in St. Lawrence County, who fear they could lose hunting clubs and ATV trails. As Brian Mann reports, environmentalists fear the land could be subdivided and developed.
