Ready, set, bake! Potsdam Food Co-op's summer Baking Fest

As part of the annual Potsdam Summer Festival, the Potsdam Food Co-op is holding a summer baking contest to benefit GardenShare. The Baking Fest will be held on Sunday, July 13th (noon-3 pm) in the Carriage House behind the Co-op.

Potsdam "cookie architect" makes edible art

You might remember the rise of the gourmet cupcake from several years back. Now, a new designer baking trend it involves that humblest of desserts - the cookie. Bakers around the country and around the world are making incredibly intricate and artistic cookies, and then sharing photos of their creations online.

One cookie designer who won what you might call the "Oscar" of cookie culture last year lives right here in the North Country. Rebecca Weld earns her living as an architect in Potsdam. But during her free time, Weld is hunched over the kitchen counter, like an alchemist, dripping food coloring drop by drop and stirring to achieve the perfect colored icing to decorate cookies.  Go to full article

Time to think gingerbread

Traditional Arts in Upstate New York kicks off its tenth annual Sugar & Spice gingerbread contest and exhibit later this month. And to help would-be bakers and builders get into the mood, TAUNY is hosting a couple of workshops.

Todd Moe spoke with TAUNY folklorist Hannah Harvester about this year's contest, and the history of gingerbread houses. The tradition began in the mid-19th century when the story of Hansel and Gretel and a witch's candy cottage become popular. But Harvester says, in some cultures, baking gingerbread goes back centuries.  Go to full article

Potsdam Food Co-op's sweetest event raises dough

The Potsdam Food Co-op will hold its 14th annual Baking Contest and Silent Auction this Sunday in the Co-op's Carriage House Bakery. You can sample some of the homemade holiday confections and savory treats and then vote on your favorites. Proceeds from the silent auction will go to Potsdam Neighborhood Center. Learning the art of gingerbread

Just as the oven begins to cool from the Thanksgiving feast, comes another seasonal favorite - Holiday baking. Fruitcakes, cookies and sweets are an annual tradition in many households this time of year. During the month of December, visitors to the Traditional Arts In Upstate New York, or TAUNY, gallery in Canton will be asked to vote for their favorite gingerbread house. Earlier this month, TAUNY offered a chance to learn the tasty art of building gingerbread structures. Gingerbread architect Sue Wilder held gingerbreading workshops for eager bakers to learn some secrets of making gingerbread houses. Beth Robinson, co-host of NCPR's monthly arts program Open Studio, stopped by one of the workshops.  Go to full article

You might say baking this time of year is a very real example of the warmth of the Holidays.
