Barbara McMartin, 1932-2005
(09/28/05) Adirondack author and activist Barbara McMartin died yesterday at the age of 73. She had been battling breast cancer for more than two decades. McMartin spent thirty years exploring the region. She wrote more than twenty books, capturing the history and the environmental conflicts of the Adirondacks. She authored and edited a series of popular guidebooks. McMartin also sat on the state's Forest Preserve Advisory committee and served as its chairman. She was honored in 2004 by the Residents Committee for the Protection of the Adirondacks, with an Adirondack Park Defender award. Brian Mann traveled to McMartin's home in Canada Lake last year to talk with about her life and her final book The Privately Owned Adirondacks.

  The spin that one British newspaper has put on this otherwise unremarkable story may give you a laugh. So might the video that the <em>Cape Cod Times</em> produced. NPR's Frank Langfitt can't get over how much things have changed for movie fans such as him. In only a decade or so, China's theaters have gone high-tech. And they've gotten expensive. As officials count ballots from this week's first-ever free presidential election, the Muslim Brotherhood is claiming its candidate got the most votes and will be in a runoff next month against ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister.  The historic first mission to dock a commercial spacecraft at the International Space Station is happening today, and is being webcast around the world. When the Chinese firm Wanda announced the purchase of AMC cinemas, it may not have made a lot of business sense in the short term.
