Aubertine shocks Barclay, wins 48th Senate seat

The North Country sent shock waves through New York State politics yesterday. Democrat Darrel Aubertine scored a stunning upset, defeating Republican Will Barclay in a district that hasn't elected a Democrat in more than a century. In unofficial results, Aubertine won 27,901 of the votes to Barclay's 25,345. That's a margin of about 2500 votes, with only about 2300 absentee ballots cast. The two candidates were seeking to replace Senator Jim Wright, who resigned last month to take a job with a lobbying firm. Aubertine's North Country victory sends shockwaves through Albany

Darrel Aubertine's victory last night is sending shock-waves across New York's political landscape. The New York Times called the election "a major victory" for Governor Spitzer and his party. The Albany Times-Union predicted that the defeat might force Republican Senate leader Joe Bruno to step down. Special election today; Barclay gains Independence ballot line

Polls are open in one of the most hotly contested elections in North Country history. Voters in Oswego, Jefferson, and the western half of St. Lawrence County will decide whether Democrat Darrel Aubertine or Republican Will Barclay take Jim Wright's Senate Seat. Wright stepped down last month to take a job with an energy lobbying firm. Today's results will have huge statewide implications. Poll: Aubertine, Barclay neck-and-neck

The first public poll in the 48th Senate district shows a race that's too close to call. The Watertown Daily Times-Zogby poll finds Democrat Darrel Aubertine with a 40 to 38 percent edge over Republican Will Barclay among likely voters, well within the poll's margin of error. The campaign's nasty tone appears to be sticking to Barclay more than Aubertine, says Zogby pollster Fritz Wenzel. He discussed the poll with David Sommerstein.  Go to full article

The race for the state Senate seat in St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Oswego counties enters its last full week tomorrow. Aubertine, Barclay air differences in debate

An audience of 300 last night saw two different kinds of politician at the second debate between Republican Will Barclay and Democrat Darrel Aubertine. The two are campaigning to succeed state Senator Jim Wright. Barclay portrayed himself as the fighter who'll take on New York City Democrats. Aubertine spoke of bipartisanship and getting things done. And this time, in Watertown, the two didn't shy away from the tone set by attack ads that have been central to the race.
