Feb 27, 2008 — The North Country sent shock waves through New York State politics yesterday. Democrat Darrel Aubertine scored a stunning upset, defeating Republican Will Barclay in a district that hasn't elected a Democrat in more than a century. In unofficial results, Aubertine won 27,901 of the votes to Barclay's 25,345. That's a margin of about 2500 votes, with only about 2300 absentee ballots cast. The two candidates were seeking to replace Senator Jim Wright, who resigned last month to take a job with a lobbying firm. The Watertown Daily Times-Zogby poll finds Democrat Darrel Aubertine with a 40 to 38 percent edge over Republican Will Barclay among likely voters, well within the poll's margin of error.
