Champlain Valley students turn a boat shop into a classroom

A group of Vermont high school students has been hard at work since January building a wooden long boat by hand. They collected the materials and built the boat piece by piece, gaining skills and confidence as they went.

The program is a collaboration between the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and program called Diversified Occupations. The program offers kids who struggle in the classroom a different approach to learning.

Hornbeck's Park Agency bid blocked, likely dead

For nearly twelve months, Adirondack businessman and environmentalist Peter Hornbeck has been waiting. Hornbeck is a boat builder in Omstedville, in Essex County. Last year, Governor David Paterson appointed him to sit on the Adirondack Park Agency's board of commissioners.

But his track record as a conservationist sparked opposition from local government groups and from Republican state Senator Betty Little. Little convinced Democrats in the Senate to delay Hornbeck's confirmation. Once again last week, a key committee left his appointment on the shelf.

Now Governor Paterson is leaving office and Republicans appear to have won a new majority in the Senate. After all those months, Hornbeck's bid to sit on the APA board appears to have reached a dead end. On Friday, Hornbeck told Brian Mann that he's been in a kind of political limbo, with little information about the process in Albany or what might happen next.  Go to full article

Heard Up North: SLU students build a canoe

It's a big paddling weekend in Canton. Saturday and Sunday are the 46th Annual Rushton Memorial Canoe Races on the Grasse River. Among the racers in the college student category will be a team from St. Lawrence University who built their own canoe. David Sommerstein visited their workshop when the canoe was under construction for today's Heard Up North.  Go to full article

Heard Up North: Building An Adirondack Guideboat

Paddlers competed yesterday in the 44th annual Willard Hanmer guide boat race in Saranac Lake. Hanmer was one of the great Adirondack boat builders. In today's Heard Up North, we hear from Chris Woodward who now operates Hanmer's boat building shop.  Go to full article
