St. Lawrence County pursues universal broadband

The day after Christmas, President Bush signed a $555 billion spending bill. It allows the federal government to operate for another year. It also includes almost 10,000 member items, pet projects for the home districts of individual lawmakers. One of Senator Hillary Clinton's earmarks is almost $200,000 to extend broadband Internet access to rural St. Lawrence County. The money comes through the county Chamber of Commerce. Pat McKeown is the chamber's interim director. She told David Sommerstein towns like Canton, Potsdam, Massena, and Ogdensburg are covered for high-speed Internet access. Spitzer wants universal broadband for rural New York

Governor Eliot Spitzer used his appearance yesterday at the statewide Farm Bureau meeting in Niagara Falls to unveil a new push for rural internet access. Spitzer says high-speed broadband and wireless will play a big part in making farms and other rural businesses more competitive.  Go to full article

$7.6 million grant will improve North Country telemedicine

The Federal Communications Commission will spend $7.6 million helping to build a telemedicine network in the North Country. The grant will serve a dozen hospitals, clinics, and community colleges in the region. Brian Mann spoke with Howard Lowe, head of the Technical Assistance Center at SUNY Plattsburgh. Lowe's group has led an effort to develop new high-speed broadband services in the region. He says installation of new fiber-optic cables could begin as early as next year.  Go to full article
