A Singing Valentine, Barbershop-style

As much a part of the American culture as Mom and apple pie, barbershop quartet singing is an American institution. It's alive today, largely through the efforts of an organization called the Society of the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. It was founded in 1938 by an Oklahoma lawyer and a banker who found a mutual love for vocal harmony. Todd Moe has more.

Appleton Arena 50th Anniversary

This weekend Washington DC was displaying its essential characteristics: fur coats and black ties, thousand dollar roasts, fleets of motorcades, and, of course, the inauguration of a president. At the same time, a North Country institution was preening in its own way. Saturday marked the 50th birthday of St. Lawrence University's venerable Appleton Hockey Arena. And Dartmouth, the same team that faced off against the Larries to inaugurate Appleton on January 20, 1951, returned to relive college hockey history. So did St. Lawrence alumni, former players, and former Saints broadcasters to share fond memories of a hockey arena with one foot firmly rooted in the past. Corning Expansion

With the U.S. economy slowing, Governor Pataki's projections of an economic rebound for Upstate New York may be hasty. But there was good news for the North Country yesterday when southern-tier based Corning Incorporated announced it will expand its plant in Canton. The investment is expected to bring 125 new jobs to St. Lawrence County over the next three years. As David Sommerstein reports, Lieutenant Governor Mary Donohue was on hand to spread the message that the state is doing all it can to make growth and investment in Upstate New York easy for business.  Go to full article

Meet the Masters: Norwood Brass Firemen, Community Brass Band

The Volunteer Fire Department Band of Norwood (more familiar to many as the Norwood Brass Firemen) dates back to the late nineteenth century. Varying over the years from eight to twenty four members, they have played at everything from local celebrations to presidential inaugurations and the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.  Go to full article
