Algerian Detainee Granted U.S. Asylum

The Board of Immigration Appeals in Buffalo has granted an Algerian man refugee status. Activist Mohamed Cherfi was turned over to U.S. authorities north of Plattsburgh last year following the raid of a church in Quebec City where he had sought sanctuary. He's been held for 13 months in a Buffalo detention facility run by the Department of Homeland Security. Church Raid In Canada Sparks Protests & Deportation to US

US authorities in Buffalo are holding an Algerian man, deported from Canada earlier this month. Mohamed Cherfi is a prominent immigrant-rights activist. He was detained in Quebec City after police raided a Protestant church where he had sought sacntuary. The case has sparked protests across Canada.
