Jeremiah Monroe, age 31, died in Kandahar, Afghanistan on Sept. 17, 2009
(09/28/09) An Army soldier from the Adirondack town of Chester was laid to rest over the weekend. Jeremiah Monroe was 31 years old when he was killed by a roadside bomb in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
As Brian Mann reports, his death has brought sorrow to his family and his small mountain village.
(09/21/09) The Defense Department has confirmed the death of a soldier from Brant Lake, in the Adirondacks, who was serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Todd Moe has more.
(06/24/09) Dozens of Adirondack artists have donated their works to help fund a social services agency in the southern Adirondacks. The artwork will be exhibited and sold at a silent auction this Sunday at the Fern Lodge in Chester, NY. Event organizer Susan Murante says the Outreach Center helps those in need find jobs, clothing and food. She spoke with Todd Moe.

(10/10/07) TAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, hands out its annual North Country Legends awards in Canton this Sunday. One of the recipients, 88 year-old Annis Holmes, opened her yarn shop in Chestertown in 1952. She still runs the shop and teaches people to knit. She's known as an expert Adirondack Buff mitten knitter, developed in response to the region's cold winters. Todd Moe stopped by her knitting shop recently for a chat.

(11/24/06) The December issue of Adirondack Life magazine tells the story of Jane McCrea, a young Scottish woman who lived in Fort Edwards in the 1770s. While waiting to meet her fiance, McCrea was murdered and scalped by native soldiers loyal to the British. Her death sparked outrage in the American colonies and served as a major catalyst for the Revolutionary War. In the centuries since, McCrea has become a part of North Country legend. The Adirondack Life article was written by David Starbuck, who lives in Chestertown. Starbuck teaches anthropology at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire and led the scientific team that is working to reconstruct details of McCrea's life. He told Brian Mann that Jane McCrea's story is tangled up in his own family's history.

(06/01/06) Thunderstorms and heavy rain hit much of the North Country yesterday and last night. Many parts of the Adirondacks were without power. The storms also brought a fast and furious hailstorm. Bill Knoble of Chestertown told Gregory Warner he's never seen anything like it.

He's the author of Saratoga County Ghosts and Ghosts of the Northeast. His latest book, Haunted Saratoga County contains dozens of ghost stories and tales from the southern Adirondacks. Todd Moe spoke with Pitkin about those stories in Saratoga county, which Pitkin says is the most haunted county in America.
