Clinton Pushes Extension of Tax Credit to Poor Families

Senator Hillary Clinton is pushing a Senate measure to give a $400-a-child tax credit to millions of low-income families not included in the recent $350 billion tax cut package. Clinton has signed onto a bill sponsored by Democrats and a few Republicans to extend the tax credit, to be paid for by ending some corporate tax shelters.  Go to full article

Communities That Care Idea Spreads to St. Lawrence County

A youth survey in 2001 showed high rates of alcohol use among students in 16 districts throughout St. Lawrence County. The survey was given to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12. The results confirmed what local health officials basically knew already, that alcohol use and abuse is a continuing problem in the county. To address the risks of alcohol, drug and other teen problem behaviors, local representatives from human service agencies, law enforcement and education began training in the Communities That Care initiative. Farm-to-School: Improving Farm Income and School Lunches

Cornell Cooperative Extension officials in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence county say the time is ripe to start serving more North Country-grown produce in local schools. Cooperative Extension started its first farm-to-school pilot programs last summer in Canton, Massena and at SUNY-Potsdam. The aim this year is to get more farmers and schools involved. Walt Disney opened his first theme park in the summer of 1955. But half a decade before Disneyland, there was Santa's Workshop in Wilmington ? the creation of north country native Arto Monaco. Monaco built a half-dozen theme parks. Most are gone now, swept away by changing tastes. But Monaco himself is still around, still creating make-believe worlds.
