Preview: SLU's Music Ensembles

The University Chorus fall concert, "America Sings Praises: Hymns, Shape-Note, Spirituals" will be performed at St. Lawrence University's Gunnison Chapel Saturday evening (8 pm), and Sunday afternoon (2 pm) in St. Mary's Cathedral in Ogdensburg. University Chorus director Barry Torres told Todd Moe the performances will feature songs of worship, including well-known hymns.  Go to full article

Broadway Diva Returns to Crane for Benefit Concert

Acclaimed soprano Lisa Vroman played the role of Christine in Phantom of the Opera, touring for 9 months and then opening its long San Francisco run for 5 years. She reprised the role on Broadway. Vroman grew up in Jefferson county, graduated from the Crane School of Music at SUNY-Potsdam and now lives in California. She returns to Hosmer Hall Saturday night (7:30) for a scholarship benefit concert in memory of her stepfather, Calvin Gage, professor emeritus at Crane. Todd Moe caught up with Lisa Vroman and Patrick O'Neil, Music Director for the concert, in Snell Music Theatre. They talked about Lisa's career, life at Crane and her stepfather.  Go to full article

Preview: American Boychoir Coming to Potsdam

The world-renowned American Boychoir will perform in Hosmer Hall at SUNY-Potsdam Sunday night (7 pm). The concert will feature French sacred and Renaissance music, and South African Songs. The American Boychoir, based in New Jersey, is the nation's most widely touring choral ensemble. The choristers are 6th through 8th grade students. Behind The Scenes At The Metropolitan Opera

Tomorrow afternoon, North Country Public Radio will air a live performance of The Magic Flute, performed by the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center. This is the 74th year of the Met broadcast. It's a tradition here in New York and Vermont. Across the world, eleven million people hear great voices like Renee Fleming and legendary conductors like James Levine. Opera has a reputation that's more high culture than blue collar. But every week, the Met's broadcasts rely on an invisible army of tradesmen. For every singer, there's a carpenter. For every musician, there's a seamstress or a truck driver. Brian Mann visited the Met recently, for a glimpse of this behind-the-scenes world. He sends this audio postcard.  Go to full article

Preview: Ted Keegan & Syracuse Symphony in Watertown

Broadway star and Watertown native Ted Keegan is back in his hometown for a concert with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra tonight (8pm, Watertown HS). Keegan has made a name for himself with the title tole of "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway and on national tour. He told Todd Moe he has always enjoyed music theatre.  Go to full article
