Why Common Core is having a rocky start

New York's hasty implementation of the Common Core curriculum has become a lightning rod for criticism statewide. Tomorrow state education commissioner John King is holding public meetings to address teachers' and parents' concerns in Schroon Lake and Plattsburgh.

Steve Todd has been visiting classrooms across St. Lawrence county to see firsthand the stumbles and successes of the new curriculum. Todd is assistant superintendent of instruction for St. Lawrence & Lewis BOCES.

He told David Sommerstein he's seen teachers and students alike "rolling up their sleeves" to get used to more rigorous classwork and more homework.  Go to full article

In Plattburgh, hundreds talk Common Core

Over 200 teachers, parents, students, and administrators gathered at SUNY Plattsburgh last night to talk about the new Common Core curriculum and testing in public school.

Senators hear more complaints about Common Core

New York State's Teacher of the Year testified at a Senate hearing that even she could not receive high marks in her teacher evaluation process, due to what she and others say is the dysfunctional implementation of the new Common Core standards.  Go to full article

Cuomo supports ed. officials on Common Core standards

Governor Cuomo offered some support to top state education officials, who are getting blow back for a rough start to the implementation of the new common core principles in schools.

State Education Commissioner John King's been criticized for canceling a series of forums for parents around the state to talk about the new Common core standards for school children, after the first meeting in Poughkeepsie turned confrontational. His office has since rescheduled the forums in a different format. Some parents are angry because two thirds of the state's students initially failed the new tests for the Common core.  Go to full article
