NY political scene in flux as Democrats stumble

Republican fortunes in New York state can't go much lower. The GOP holds no statewide offices, and their congressional delegation has dwindled to just a handful of seats. But Democratic Governor David Paterson has struggled politically and his appointment of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand continues to draw fire.

Republicans also have a real chance to pick up a House seat in the 20th congressional district special election. A poll released last week by the campaign of Republican Jim Tedisco shows him with a 21-point lead over Democrat Scott Murphy. Little out of House race as GOP backs Tedisco

State Senator Betty Little has dropped her bid to replace Kirsten Gillibrand in the House of Representatives. The decision came yesterday afternoon, shortly after Republican leaders in the 20th Congressional District backed Assembly minority leader James Tedisco. As Brian Mann reports, Republican scrambled to move ahead of the Democrats in what will likely be a short, fierce campaign. Paterson asks Congress for financial help

McHugh, Oot spar over Iraq, civil liberties

In this election season, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have often been eclipsed by the sagging economy. But national security took center stage last night when Congressman John McHugh and challenger Mike Oot met for a debate in Plattsburgh, hosted by Mountain Lake PBS. The pair clashed repeatedly over the war's future, treatment of returning soldiers, and civil liberties. Brian Mann has our story.

McHugh agrees to debate Oot

North Country Congressman John McHugh agreed Thursday to face his Democratic challenger Mike Oot in three debates next month in the race for New York's 23rd Congressional District seat. Treadwell pro-choice, praises staunchly pro-life GOP ticket

Republican candidate Sandy Treadwell, from Essex County, is running for the 20th congressional district. He hopes to unseat Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand. Treadwell traveled to the Twin Cities for the Republican National Convention.
