(10/27/09) The Governors of New York and Vermont unveiled a new emergency transportation plan yesterday. It's designed to help families struggling with the closure of the Lake Champlain bridge. Both states say they will begin offering free ferry and bus service this morning to people affected by the crisis at Crown Point.
The bridge closed twelve days ago, after a consultant for New York's Department of Transportation found unsafe cracks in two cement foundations. That affected more than 2,000 commuters and business owners who used the span each day.
In addition to free ferry crossings, buses will transport workers free of charge from New York to three major employers on the Vermont side of the lake. Trailways buses will make stops at Porter Medical Center and Middlebury College in Middlebury, and the B.F. Goodrich plant in Vergennes.
Public information meetings on the bridge closure are scheduled for tonight at the Addison Central School in Vermont and tomorrow at the Moriah Central School in Port Henry. Both sessions begin at 7pm. more
