(05/18/12) This weekend marks the official grand opening of the Lake Champlain bridge between Crown Point, New York and Addison, Vermont. Nearly three years after the old bridge was condemned and closed to traffic, the new span will see two days of dances, parades, music, and a flotilla on lake.

Brian Mann has followed the story from the beginning, and he joined Martha Foley on the line to preview the weekend.

Back in 1929, the original bridge was state-of-the-art for the era.

(11/08/11) Officials from New York and Vermont took part Monday in the opening of the new Lake Champlain Bridge, nearly two years after the old span was demolished.

The opening ceremony for the 70 million dollar bridge took place on the bridge linking Crown Point and Addison, Vt--Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin is there, as is New York Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy.

The original span was closed in October 2009 after inspectors deemed it unsafe. The 80-year-old bridge was destroyed by a controlled explosion in late December 2009. Construction on the new bridge began the following spring.

New York state transportation officials originally set the opening of the new bridge for October, but flooding in the spring caused a delay.

(08/26/11) It was a busy day Friday in the Champlain valley where crew worked from dawn to install the middle arch in the new Champlain bridge.

Brian Mann was following the work through the day, and he joined Nora Flaherty from the Fort in Crown Point.

(08/26/11) UPDATE: The arch was at the new site around 8 this morning. Lifting it into place is expected to take four to eight hours.

This morning just before six am, workers on the waterfront in Port Henry fired up their tug boats and began moving the massive four hundred foot arch that will complete the Crown Point bridge.

Fifty or so people turned out early to watch, listening quietly as the tugs' big engines rumbled. Brian Mann was on the breakwater watching as the big arch left the construction yard and began its journey south to Crown Point. He spoke with Martha Foley. more

(02/16/10) State officials are considering a plan that could shut down two of the most cherished historic sites in the North Country. John Brown's farm, just outside of Lake Placid, and the Crown Point State Historic Site in the Champlain Valley would stay closed in the spring. According to two reports published yesterday, the move is part of Governor David Paterson's sweeping statewide budget cutting plan. Brian Mann has details.

(12/28/09) State officials still sound confident that today is the day they'll demolish the Crown Point bridge. Cold weather delayed the countdown last week. But this morning at 10am engineers plan to trigger more than 800 pounds of explosives, knocking the massive structure into Lake Champlain. Brian Mann is in the Chaplain Valley and spoke this morning with Martha Foley.

(12/17/09) An advisory committee has recommended a last-minute design as the replacement for the closed Lake Champlain Bridge, set to be demolished in the coming weeks. Martha Foley has more.

(11/20/09) State officials say construction has begun on a new vehicle ferry that will run between Crown Point and Addison Vermont. A ferry made test runs at the site yesterday. Meanwhile, state officials have unveiled a new multi-million dollar aid package designed to help residents stranded by the bridge closure. Brian Mann has details.

(11/10/09) New York's acting Transportation commissioner says the Crown Point bridge is too seriously damaged to be repaired. Todd Moe has more.
