Diversifying the Dairy Industry

The North Country dairy industry is facing some of its bleakest times in memory this summer. Farmers are going deeper into debt and working jobs off the farm. The main culprit for the crisis is a year and a half of extremely low milk prices. The depressed market has forced many farmers to start spin-off businesses to make ends meet. It's called "diversification" in the industry. Low Milk Prices Take Their Toll

David Sommerstein talks with Judy Aldrich, chair of the St. Lawrence County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board, about factors contributing to the struggling dairy industry. Schumer Visits Lewis County and Massena

Senator Chuck Schumer outlined his agenda of North Country issues in two appearances yesterday. New York's senior senator discussed a statewide snowmobile insurance plan in Brantingham in Lewis County. Another Cheese Plant to Close in St. Lawrence County

Another cheese factory in St. Lawrence County plans to close its doors this year. Losurdu Foods in Heuvelton will shut down it operations on October 18th, putting over 100 people out of work. The closure will leave the county with the least number of cheese factories in its history. Jody Tosti has more.  Go to full article
