Tradition and Sociability at Grindstone Island Square Dance
Aug 30, 2005 — Grindstone Island is a place where the past is quite present. Grindstone is just opposite the St. Lawrence River village of Clayton. It's several miles long, one of the largest of the Thousand Islands. There are no official roads. Folks get around in old jalopies or ATVs. Only 11 people live on Grindstone all winter, but when the weather changes, families who've spent generations of summers there return, and a larger community reassembles. On Saturday nights, the place to be is the big dance at Dodge Hall. Usually it's DJs or rock 'n' roll bands who supply the music. But every once in a while, some fiddlers and callers get together for an old-fashioned square dance. David Sommerstein joined in a couple of weekends ago, and sent this audio postcard. Theatre: Everett Dance Theatre at SUNY-Potsdam
Feb 28, 2005 — The Everett Dance Theatre, a nationally known dance and theatre company from Rhode Island, is in residency at SUNY-Potsdam this week. The troupe uses dance, theatre, song and video technology to explore the role of family and self-identity. Nola Rocco, with the SUNY-Potsdam Dance and Drama Department, says there are a number of workshops and events open to the public this week. Go to full article

The story of dance from the past century is told in Nancy Reynolds and Malcolm McCormick's book, No Fixed Points: Dance in the Twentieth Century, published late last year by Yale University Press. Oct 03, 2003 — Choreographer Billbob Brown and his dance company, Chaos Theory Dance, will perform at SUNY-Potsdam's College Theatre in Satterlee Hall Saturday night at 8. Chaos Theory Dance is a science and video based dance collective. Brown has been working this week with Potsdam dance students who will premiere a new work Saturday night. Oct 01, 2001 — Brian Mann recorded the Keepers of the Eastern Door at SUNY Plattsburgh during a September 2001 performance. They are Mohawk singers and dancers from Kahnawake in Quebec on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. They perform Women's Corn Shuffle Dance and Alligator Dance. Go to full article
