Adirondack Attic: an industry inside a prison

In the 19th century, iron mining was the main operation at the Dannemora Correctional Facility, with three main mines scattered within the structure's walls. The mines provided employment for the convicts and earned the region the nickname, "Little Siberia." Inmates also helped with prison construction and renovations. In Lyon Mountain, a rally to save three North Country prisons

More than 200 people rallied yesterday in the American Legion hall in Lyon Mountain. The Clinton County community is fighting to save its state prison, which anchors the local economy. Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility is one of three prisons in the North Country slated for closure next year. As Brian Mann reports, prison guards are hoping to form a united front across the region.

Assemblywoman Addie Russell from Theresa also sent a letter to Governor Paterson this week, urging him to keep the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility open. In her letter, she accused the state Department of Correctional Facility of using "false" claims to justify the closure. According to Russell, maximum security prisons in the state are still overcrowded and too many inmates are being "double-bunked." Russell also argued that Ogendesburg's economy "will be devastated" if the correctional facility closes.  Go to full article

Two Elementary Schools May Close in Clinton County

Two elementary schools might close in Clinton County, because of declining enrollments. The Plattsburgh Press Republican is reporting this morning that the Saranac Central school district will once again consider shutting down schools in Dannemora and Cadyville.  Go to full article

Media Mogul Buys 3 Adirondack Radio Frequencies

A Kentucky-based radio conglomerate has purchased commercial broadcast frequencies in Saranac Lake, Dannemora, and Old Forge. Radioactive LLC bought the frequencies in December as part of an auction held by the Federal Communications Commission. As Brian Mann reports, the company is run by a media mogul who once controlled one of the biggest radio corporations in the U.S.  Go to full article

Apparent Prisoner Suicides at Dannemora Investigated

State prison officials say they're investigating three apparent suicides at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. The three deaths at the maximum security prison occurred in the last two months--with the most recent case on Monday morning. Brian Mann has details.  Go to full article

State of Mental Health Care in the Prisons

A new report issued today argues that the 67,000 inmates in New York's prison system need better health care - and mental health counseling. Eleven percent of the state's prisoners are diagnosed with mental illness. Brian Mann talks with Jennifer Wynn, with the Correctional Association of New York, which issued the study.

The Department of Correctional Services declined to be interviewed to respond to the report, instead issuing a press release.  Go to full article
