A flurry of dance in Saratoga Springs

One of the largest dance festivals in North America, with lots of participatory dance and music instruction sessions, parties, and performances, gets underway in downtown Saratoga Springs today. Adirondack Council Hires Former Earth First Activist

The Adirondack Council has hired a new conservation director who once worked for a controversial environmental group called Earth First. John Davis, who lives near Westport, will be one of the most visible members of the Council. In the 1980s, he edited the Earth First! Journal. At the time, the group faced criticism even within the environmental movement for encouraging acts of industrial sabotage against the timber industry. In 1991, Davis published an anthology called the Earth First! Reader: Ten Years of Radical Environmentalism. He later helped to launch another magazine called Wild Earth and helped to found a less confrontational environmental group called The Wildlands Project.
