New York's National Guard, pt. 1: Training For Iraq
Nov 20, 2003 — More than 650 members of New York's National Guard are training at Fort Drum Army base near Watertown. They're preparing to become full-time soldiers for a year in Iraq. It's the first time the New York National Guard has been activated for wartime service since World War II. Many of the Guardsmen are from North Country towns, from Massena and Ogdensburg to Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. In the first of a two-part series on the deployment, David Sommerstein reports on making the physical and mental transition required to move from the North Country to an unstable combat zone. Guard Soldiers Prepare For Departure
