(04/21/10) This week, North Country Public Radio is looking in-depth at the big conservation land deals that are reshaping the Adirondack Park.

The New York Post has raised allegations that one of those deals, in Clinton County, was mishandled. According to an article published earlier this month, the Department of Environmental Conservation overpaid for land near Lyon Mountain by millions of dollars. The paper's sources described the 2008 sale as a "sweetheart" deal designed to benefit the Adirondack Nature Conservancy.

But as Brian Mann reports, it appears that the land sale included a series of checks and balances designed to insure a fair deal.

We'll conclude our series on major Adirondack land conservation deals tomorrow with a look at the Adirondack Local Government Review Board and its role.

(04/08/10) The New York Post reported this week that the Adirondack Nature Conservancy reaped millions in profits from a land preservation deal with New York State. The story says the conservancy paid Domtar $6.8 million for the land, and sold it to the state for almost $10 million four years later -- an "absurd" profit as headlined in the Post.

The report is prompting reviews by the state attorney general's office into potential over-payments for the 20,000 acres in Clinton County. Martha Foley talks with Adirondack Bureau Chief Brian Mann.

(01/06/05) During his state of the state address, Governor Pataki praised a new land deal with Domtar Industries that will preserve more than a hundred thousand acres of timber land in Clinton and Franklin Counties. The 23-million dollar deal follows closely on the heels of other land purchases, involving International Paper and National Lead. Much of the land will be protected by conservation easements. Logging will continue, but sprawl and housing development are banned. Pro-environment groups say easements are an important tool for preserving open space and improving recreation. But as Brian Mann reports, some critics wonder if the state has the resources to manage these complex land deals over the long haul.

(01/05/05) Environmentalists and state officials have unveiled the third largest land conservation deal in New York's history. More than a hundred thousand acres of Adirondack timberland, owned by Domtar, will be protected from development in Clinton and Franklin counties. The 23-million dollar deal was brokered by the Adirondack Nature Conservancy. As Brian Mann reports, the Domtar lands have topped environmental groups' wish lists for more than a decade.
