Unfinished business for the NY legislature

There's around two months left in the legislative session, and a number of issues left on the agenda. But it's uncertain how many of them will actually become law.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who's failed to achieve a number of progressive items over the last two years, including public campaign finance reform and a Women's Equality Act, told the Democratic Rural Conference that he'll try to get them passed in the state legislature in the next eight weeks, before the session ends in June.  Go to full article

Dream Act supporters vow to fight on

Supporters of Dream Act legislation say they were "set up" when a hastily arranged vote on the bill in the Senate chamber late Monday led to the measure's failure by just one vote.

The focus is now shifting to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Backers say they will try to get the governor to put the measure into the state budget.  Go to full article

The NYS Dream Act is dead, for now

The Dream Act is dead for now in New York State, after the State Senate voted down the measure that would have granted college tuition aid to the children of undocumented immigrants.

The 30-29 vote defeating the Dream Act left leaders of rival Democratic factions pointing fingers.  Go to full article

NYS Assembly speaker urges Senate to pass NY DREAM Act

Assembly Democrats Tuesday, by a vote of 82 to 46, passed a one-house version of the NY DREAM Act, a bill to give college aid to the children of undocumented immigrants. They urged the Senate to follow suit.  Go to full article
