(06/20/11) Clyde Rabideau has emerged as one of the North Country's most enduring, colorful and sometimes controversial politicians. Rabideau was mayor of Plattsburgh for a decade in the 1990s and ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 1998.

Sixteen months ago, the Democrat was elected mayor of Saranac Lake, the largest community in the Adirondack Park. His latest adventure in politics has been marked by some big successes, including a public campaign to convince the Trudeau Institute to keep its laboratories in Saranac Lake.

But he has also clashed publicly and fiercely with other leaders in the North Country and his brash style is sparking criticism. Brian Mann sat down to talk in-depth with Rabideau and has our profile. more

(10/15/10) This is expected to be a big year for Republicans. But Democrats appear to have a very real shot at capturing the 114th Assembly seat that represents Clinton and Franklin counties.

The district has been a GOP stronghold for generations. But this year, Assemblywoman Janet Duprey, a Republican, is locked in a bitter contest with Conservative candidate David Kimmel.

Their divisive battle could leave an opening for Democrat Rudy Johnston.

Early reaction to his package of ethics reforms, including campaign finance reform and term limits, has been cool. But there were signs of comity yesterday. (01/04/10) A Plattsburgh-area man has announced he will challenge incumbent Assemblywoman Janet Duprey's re-election bid this year. David Kimmel, a former Marine and Army National Guard soldier who owns his own alarm company in Cadyville, plans to run against Duprey in the Republican Party primary. Chris Knight reports.

(12/17/09) Republican leaders in New York's Assembly say it's time to hold a new constitutional convention to clean up the mess in Albany. They want people's delegates, not politicians, to ask big questions about the structure of state government. Should there be two legislative bodies or just one? Should there be a cap on state spending? Backers of the idea held two public meetings in the North Country yesterday, one near Queensbury and the other in Plattsburgh. Brian Mann has our story.

(11/06/09) Political fall-out continues from this week's 23rd district congressional race. Democrat Bill Owens won, in part because of a simmering feud between conservative acvitists and Republican Party candidate Dede Scozzafava. Scozzafava dropped out of the race and endorsed Owens, instead of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. In the wake of that contest, it appears that more rifts are emerging within the GOP. Franklin County legislator Paul Maroun says he might challenge one of Scozzafava's strongest supporters in next year's Assembly race. Maroun is from Tupper Lake, describes himself as a conservative Republican. He's pro-life and opposes same-sex marriage. He says Assemblywoman Janet Duprey, who represents the 114th district, angered many Republicans when she failed to back Doug Hoffman.

(11/06/09) Assemblywoman Janet Duprey, who lives in the town of Peru, was a staunch supporter of Republican congressional candidate Dede Scozzafava. The two women share a number of maverick views that clash with their party leadership, including their support for a woman's right to choose and gay marriage. In the days since Tuesday's election Duprey says her office has been barraged with angry emails, including some that threaten her with physical violence. She sat down yesterday to talk with Brian Mann about the future of the North Country's Republican Party.

(05/13/09) New York's Assembly voted 89-52 in favor of legalizing same gender marriage yesterday.
The vote was bipartisan, with five Republicans joining the Democratic majority. North Country Assemblywoman DeDe Scozzafava, Theresa Sayward, and Janet Duprey were all among the five. Duprey had voted against previous same sex marriage bills. (Hear the statement she made as she rose to explain why changed her mind this time below.)
The Assembly vote moves New York closer to becoming the sixth state to legalize gay marriage. But for now, the measure remains stalled in the state Senate. Karen DeWitt has our story:

(04/13/09) Small-town politics can be a tough business. Feuds over local taxes and skirmishes for control of village boards can be every bit as nasty as the political fights in Albany or Washington DC. But the rancor that has enveloped in the town of Peru, in Clinton County, is in a class by itself. For nearly four years, town supervisor Donald Covel has battled openly with members of his town board. There have been public shouting matches, a recall effort, and a flurry of costly lawsuits. Covel is now facing criminal charges of official misconduct and abuse of power. As Brian Mann reports, many locals say the rancor and bitterness have crippled their local government.
