(03/11/10) Environmental officials say New York's bald eagle population may be at its highest level since restoration work began more than 30 years ago. The DEC has conducted annual eagle surveys since 1979. Blanche Town, a DEC biologist based in Potsdam, is part of a team that conducts an aerial survey of the St. Lawrence River. She told Todd Moe that 101 bald eagles were counted on the river this year.

Keeping an eye on eagles
(08/14/07) The bald eagle came close to extinction before strong measures were taken to help pull it back. The eagle was protected by the Endangered Species Act for 40 years. And the government banned toxic compounds such as DDT that caused damage to the eagles' eggs. Bob Allen caught up with researchers who are monitoring the health of the birds. They're finding the birds are still being exposed to toxic chemicals.

Delisting the Bald Eagle

(07/14/04) The American Bald Eagle is expected to come off the endangered species list soon. Once a victim of hunting and pollution, the eagles are rebounding, but scientists say monitoring must continue, for the sake of the eagles and the sake of the environment. The Great Lakes Radio Consortium's Bob Kelleher reports.

(03/01/04) A wild bird sanctuary is using high-tech tracking devices to keep track of bald eagles recovering from West Nile virus. There's no medicinal cure for the disease. But volunteers have nursed some bald eagles back to health. They've recently released a few of the birds and are watching to see if the disease affects their long term behavior. The Great Lakes Radio Consortium's Patty Murray has more.
