Detractors hate the noise, the view, and what they call deceptive claims made by big corporations. Tomorrow, we look at the challenges facing local town boards stuck in the middle of the debate. Today, an upclose look at the giants themselves, and two neighbors' reactions. Noble Environmental Power has already erected 60 of 122 turbines in the western Clinton County towns of Clinton and Ellenburg. David Sommerstein was there as turbine #6 went up, and has our story.

(10/03/06) Wind power opponents have sued to block construction of a wind farm in Clinton County. The lawsuit says the towns of Altona, Clinton, and Ellenburg failed to conduct a complete environmental review. David Sommerstein reports.

(06/08/06) A wind farm developer in Clinton County Wednesday paid a man $20,000 to remove a blockade of his driveway. Noble Environmental Power has leased the property to store wind turbine blades and parts. David Sommerstein reports.

(04/17/06) Two more North Country towns are embroiled in debate over industrial-size wind farms. In Cape Vincent, hours of public meetings have failed to yield setback requirements for a proposed 60-windmill farm near the St. Lawrence River. The town of Plattsburgh will consider a one-year moratorium on wind farms tonight.

In northern Clinton County, two projects promising almost 300 windmills are moving ahead. One of the companies held open houses last week to court supporters. Opponents have sued to halt the plans. As David Sommerstein reports, at stake are an economic windfall and a rural landscape that could be forever changed.

(03/16/06) The Plattsburgh Press Republican is reporting this morning that two north country towns are being sued over their wind farm laws. Anti-wind farm activists say the towns failed to satisfy state environmental review laws. Brian Mann has details.

(03/09/06) The town of Ellenburg in Clinton County is hosting an informal meeting Friday on wind farms. Two developers want to erect a total of 74 turbines there. As David Sommerstein reports, local leaders want to get out accurate information.

(03/02/06) New York State has pledged to get 25% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2013. 18% already comes from hydropower. Experts say most of the remaining 7% will come from the wind. And the North Country is poised to play a prime role. 120 turbines are already spinning out power on the Tug Hill Plateau. Two companies have plans to erect hundreds of turbines in Clinton and Franklin counties. And more prospecting is underway from Cape Vincent to Chateaugay. Wind farms can evoke strong reactions, often for aesthetic reasons. But anti-wind groups in the region have a long list of negatives that go far beyond the view. David Sommerstein looks at the issues.
