Couple Rescued From Ice Floe On Lake Champlain

Emergency crews in Clinton County rescued a couple yesterday morning from an ice floe drifting on Lake Champlain. Annett and Theodore Rannymakers, both in their mid-sixties, were visiting from Quebec. They'd gone ice fishing near Isle LaMotte, Vermont, when a large chunk of ice broke free and blew across the lake. According to the Plattsburgh Press Republican, the Rannymakers were uninjured by their ordeal. Crews from the Champlain, Cumberland Head, and the Clinton County Sheriff's department took part in the rescue. Fire chief Brian Pelkey, from Rouses Point, is part of the Cold Water Rescue Team that helped bring the couple safely back to shore.  Go to full article

Elizabethtown Hospital Reopens Damaged Wing; Fire Called "Accident"

Patients returned to Elizabethtown's community hospital on Monday, following a weekend fire that forced evacuation of the west wing. Emergency officials say the blaze may have been triggered by a failed piece of equipment in one of the rooms. Brian Mann has details.  Go to full article

Rangers Say DEC Policies Jeopardize Public Safety

Forest rangers in the North Country say new Department of Environmental Conservation policies are making it harder for them to respond to emergencies. An ice jam on the Salmon River triggered a flood through the weekend, forcing residents in Malone to evacuate at least eight homes. Fuel Truck Recovered After Ausable River Crash

State police say a propane-delivery truck has been pulled from the icy Ausable River near Lake Placid. An accident yesterday afternoon forced officials to shut down Rt. 86 for much of the day. Brian Mann has details.  Go to full article

SARS Disease Turns Up In New York

Dozens of cases of a deadly flu-like illness known as Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome have been reported in the United States. Two cases have been confirmed in northern New York - and more than a hundred across the border in Ontario. Silver Blames Pataki for Poor 911 System

Snowmobile Accident Kills Cadyville Woman

This weekend brought another snowmobile death in the north country. A 28-year-old woman from Cadyville died Saturday night after being thrown from a sled. As Brian Mann reports, one of the drivers involved in the accident has been charged with driving while intoxicated.  Go to full article
